Prescription Saftey Eyewear

Who needs them?

Regulations state personal eye protectors are required “In areas where a significant risk from eye and face hazards exists and it is not possible to eliminate or control eye and face hazards, personal eye and face protectors shall be provided and worn at all times by persons working in or passing through such areas (AS/NZS 1336:2014 4.1)”.  If you are in an environment where there are potential hazards and need of eye protection “Every effort should be made to eliminate eye and face hazards by means of appropriate engineering methods (AS/NZS 1336:2014 2.1)”.  The employers should maintain safety measures by reviewing the measures regularly to ensure the effectiveness of the safety measures is maintained (AS/NZS 1336:2014 2.2).
If you are unsure whether you need safety glasses or you need to supply safety glasses for your employees please see table 4.1 of AS/NZS 1336:2014).  Optik Eyecare are part of the nationwide IOP group of independent practices which currently handle many large corporate prescription safety eyewear contracts.

Benefits of prescription safety eyewear

Compared with previous methods used to obtain medium impact protection, prescription safety glasses have the following advantages:
  • Increased comfort
  • Improved vision leading to greater precision and efficiency while working
  • Reduced weight
  • More fashionable look
  • Less reflection
  • Less restriction of visual field
  • Ease in movements
  • Better employee compliance reducing the potential lost time through injuries
  • When employees experience ‘ownership’ of protective eyewear they may be less likely to regard them as disposable and therefore will tend to take better care of the glasses.

Eye examinations

At Optik we pride ourselves on our full comprehensive eye examinations.  All our Adult eye examinations include Retinal photos, visual field screening tests and a laser assessment of the optic nerve.
We recommend everyone to get an eye examination every 2 years.  If you wear prescription safety glasses “the wearer should have an eye examination at no greater than two yearly intervals at which time the prescription eye protectors can be inspected (AS/NZS 1336:2014 4.6)”.
Our independent practice is in Pukekohe and plenty of off street parking is available.
As members of the IOP group this allows us to have centralized billing if required.

Personal eye protectors should be (AS/NZS 1336.4.3):
