Optik Eyecare Pukekohe

Optik Eyecare first opened its doors in 1990 as John Kelsey Optometrist. Prior to this John worked in the UK where he met his wife Laurraine, whilst working in a very busy optometry practice.  Initially the newly opened practice was very quiet, but over the last 27 years the practice has developed into one of the largest purpose built optometry facilities in the country.

Optik have now examined over 31,000 patients and still see patients that first came to the practice 27 years ago. John and Laurraine are still the sole owners of Optik Eyecare and now employ fifteen members of staff, including three other optometrists.
As well as being strongly customer focused they have also strived to make the practice a great work environment with most staff giving long years of service. Due to this, patients have been able to build long term relationships with staff.

John made the decision early for the practice to have a strong clinical focus. “We wanted to be the first choice for clients with concerns about their or their family’s eye health, both for chronic conditions and those of sudden onset. We work closely with many GPs throughout the Franklin area to provide vision assessments for their patients, particularly those regarded as ocular emergencies” he explains.

The frame retail gallery showcases the latest frame styles and offers ranges for all age groups. The practice was purpose built and designed to be family friendly and accessible to older clients and to those with disabilities. “One of the best things we put into our practice are the two computers with internet access in the waiting room. This is fantastic to keep kids occupied, except when a family with three kids comes in then it’s a musical chairs dive for the two computers. We also get people ringing up asking if their kids are in the practice solely to use the computers to play games on. In some cases they are there probably also dining on free biscuits. Very resourceful” John revealed.

Over the last 25 years Optik Eyecare has been proud sponsors of local bowling club tournaments, as well as many other community events.  For the past four years Optik has been raising money for an eye clinic in Phom Phen, Cambodia through Rose Charities.
